5 Ways on How a Music Artist Can Build a Social Media Following

How do you build a social media following? It has gotten tough. But then, the internet is a double-edged sword.

The internet has changed the world in ways we never imagined. Today, no leader, artist, or entrepreneur ever goes out there without using social media channels to influence their fan base and grow their followers.

This is no longer a side option now. It is a must. Without social media following, you will end up in the underground scene and you can never maximize your potential as an artist. If you want to dominate the world, you must be seen. And you must be heard.

1. Take Your Music to Different Platforms

The most common mistake that musicians make is the lack of execution. Many artists create a page or an Instagram account but they do not treat it as a serious avenue to advertise their talents and gigs.

The first step in building a huge following is making yourself visible in the key social media platforms and making sure that you optimize each for its intended use. You Tube is for videos, Facebook is for your fan page and events, and Instagram for your pictures.

No artist will benefit from social media explosion if he does not spread his music as far and as wide as he could. It will also benefit an artist if he places his music into streaming services like Spotify and iTunes.

2. Connect with Influencers

Unless you already have a huge following, it makes sense to connect with bloggers and Instagram influencers and capitalize on their audiences. Find reputable influencers in your music niche and craft a deal that will benefit both you and the influencer.

You are a musician, not a publicist.

And while you are not that big yet and perhaps you have no manager, you must take the hard road and leave the publicity to these influencers who know what they are doing. What you need to do is to focus on making good music which the influencer will not be ashamed to promote.

If you get in the radar of bloggers and influencers who have millions of followers, you are essentially standing on the shoulders of giants. The key here is building a relationship with the influencer.

3. Engage Your Audience

There is nothing more disdainful to a fan than being ignored. A frequent appreciation about the support of your fans will go a long way. And this is not difficult to do on social media.

While we know that it is not practical to respond to all comments, it will surely make an impact if you respond to meaningful queries on your social media channels.

If somebody wants to know where your gig is, answer the question. Never ever direct a person to a link to answer a question. For example, if a fan wants to know the location and date of your next gig, do not say “please visit this link: [link here].”

Why? Because this answer is not personalized. At the very least, use the fan’s name and answer the question briefly, then provide the link for more details.

In addition, you should also post appreciation to a specific person or fan group from time to time. This makes fans feel appreciated. And this is how you drive loyalty.

4. Sponsor Ads

Organic growth is dead. Facebook and all social media platforms are flooded with posts. And yours is likely going to the bottom of the pile by the time your potential fans wake up in the morning. The only way you can get your music to the right people is through sponsoring advertisements.

This should not cost you too much. You can create advertisements in Facebook for as little as $5 per day. All you need to do is to post engaging content and pay for sponsorship.

The benefit of using this is that your content goes to the right people. You have the liberty to select where you want to grow your following, what specific niche, and what specific age group.

You have to view this as an investment. Before the internet, professionals in the music industry had to advertise in as many platforms as they could—radio, TV, and print. Today, they still do.

What you want to achieve is to get as many page likes as you can. After a successful run, all of these people will see your new posts on their feeds. There is no need to advertise anymore since you already have a following. The only reason you will need to advertise in the future is if you want to make ticket sales.

5. Support a Cause or a Principle

Merely singing does not make you a fan magnet, unless you are too good at what you do. Today, many fans will follow you if they feel a connection between you and them.

Some musicians support causes for children, some charity, and some musicians support political and social movements. As an artist, there has to be something out there that can fill a space in your heart and soul.

Look for it. And when you find it, be its voice. Before you know it, you will have more followers than you have ever imagined.
